Meanwhile, our auto uncle is also busy to get us out of his car.  Still, he was forced to go to Madhyamgram.  But for a 12 km road from Dattapukur to Madhyamgram, Kaka asked for 600 rupees, which at that time was 300 rupees.  After much insistence on Kaka, it was understood that since Kaka had given us the taste of Dhoom bike in his car, he would not reduce the rent in any way.  We also had to pay the same.  Then some of us started unloading all the luggage from the auto and the rest went in search of the car.  After a while we saw that they are coming with 2 taxis, it was decided that we will go from Madhyamgram to Dumdum station with two cars then take the train from there to Sealdah.  Because it will take a long time to go to Sealdah by car and we will miss the train.  So we hurriedly got in the car with our luggage and left for Dumdum.  It was 9:15 on the clock.

 We told clearly to our driver about our situation and he increased the speedometer as much as possible.  But still the crowd of passengers returning to the office in front of gate number two and a half could not be avoided;  we got stuck in a traffic jam.

  After overcoming the crowd, I reached Dumdum station as soon as possible, unloaded my bag and went to pay the rent.  Going to bargain with this uncle, I realized that the uncle had reached our Dumdum station so quickly in the midst of this jam. There is no word in anyone's mouth, everyone is just calling on God with one mind.  Will it be the last defense?  Will I get the Darjeeling mail?
 As the train slowly enters the Sealdah station, from a distance we see the Darjeeling Mail standing quietly in its place, i.e. on platform No. 9B.  Everyone's chest tightened after seeing the train.  Everyone is unanimously calling on God to give our train a platform around the 9B platform.  But that winter night, God was probably sleeping with a blanket or was busy celebrating the New Year on the night of December 31st.  That is why he may no longer hear our call.  And our train slowly moved towards the platform No. 2 of Sealdah station as per its wish.  We all stood at the door of the train and heard the first siren of the Darjeeling Mail.  The clock at the Sealdah station tells us the time is 10 minutes past 10 o'clock.  As usual our down Naihati stopped at the local No. 2 platform, we stepped on the platform and Darjeeling Mail also sounded its last siren and in the mood of the king told us all to leave the platform for our destination.  To make one last attempt, we ran around for the purpose of 9B platform.  But after overcoming the distance from platform 2 to platform 9B and the crowds at Sealdah station at that time, when we came to the front of platform 9B, our Darjeeling mail already left.

ইতিমধ্যে সেই গোলমাল এমন আকার ধারণ করলো যে সেই খবর আমাদের সবার বাড়ির লোকের কান পর্যন্ত পৌঁছে গেলো। দত্তপুকুর স্টেশনে ট্রেন অবরোধ এর কারণে শিয়ালদা বনগাঁও শাখার সব ট্রেন চলাচলও বন্ধ, এবং সেটা যথারীতি খবরের চ্যানেল গুলো টেলিকাস্ট করা শুরু করলো। ওই দেখে আমাদের সবার বাড়ির লোকের শীত কালেও ঘাম ছোটার উপক্রম। ফলস্বরূপ আমাদের প্রত্যেকের ফোনে ফোন আসা শুরু। কোথায় আছি, কি পরিস্থিতির মধ্যে আছি, বাড়ি ফিরে যাবো কিনা ইত্যাদি ইত্যাদি। কিন্তু আমরা তো ঠিক করেই নিয়েছি যে বাড়ি থেকে একবার যখন বেড়িয়েছি তখন গন্তব্যে পৌঁছেবই তা যে করেই হোক। তাছাড়া ওদিকে পেষক এবং লেপচাজগৎ হোমস্টে তে বুকিং এর অ্যাডভান্স দেওয়াও হয়েগেছে,  সুতরাং ফোন গুলো সব সাইলেন্ট করে পকেটে চালান করে দেওয়া হলো এবং আমাদের অটো বারাসাত এর দিকে ছুটে চললো কৃষ্ণনগর হাইওয়ে ধরে। আপনারা যারা কিছুদিনের মধ্যে এই রাস্তা দিয়ে যাতায়াত করেছেন তারা জানেন রাস্তাটির পরিস্থিতি বর্তমানে কি। যাকগে সেই ব্যাপারে আর না হয় নাই বা গেলাম। কিছুদূর যাওয়ার পর থেকেই বিশাল বিশাল ' হর্ন ওকে প্লিজ ' লেখা মালবাহী লরির পেছনে আটকে গেলাম। কিন্তু সময়ের তো আর লরির পেছনে আটকে থাকার বালাই নেই সে নিজের মতো এগিয়েই চলেছে।

 ঠিক তখনই আমাদের অটোর কাকা অটো টাকে ঢুকিয়ে দিলো রং সাইড দিয়ে এবং সেই দিক দিয়েই গাড়ি ছুটিয়ে দিলো সজোরে উল্টোদিক থেকে আসা সমস্ত গাড়িগুলোকে পাশ কাটিয়ে বারাসাতের দিকে। কিন্তু আমরা যতই জোরে ছোটার চেষ্টা করি না কেন সমস্যা যে আরো জোরে আমাদের পেছনে ছুটে আসছে সেটা বুঝতে পারিনি। অটোতে বসে বারাসাত থেকে শিয়ালদহ যাবার ট্রেন টাইম চেক করতে গিয়ে দেখি ওই সময় বারাসাত থেকেও কোনো ট্রেন নেই। বারাসাত কলোনীর মোড় থেকে ওলা, উবের এর যা ডিসটেন্স দেখাচ্ছে তাতে উবের আমাদের কাছে পৌঁছাতে পৌঁছাতে দার্জিলিং মেইল শিয়ালদহ স্টেশন ছেড়ে নিউ জলপাইগুড়ি পৌঁছে যাবে। অগত্যা সেই অপশনটিও বাদ। এরই মধ্যে আবার গোদের ওপর বিষফোড়া এর মতন বারাসাতে ঢোকার মুখে আমাদের অটো গেলো বিশাল এক জ্যাম এ আটকে।

ধারেকাছে কোনো ট্র্যাফিক পুলিশও দেখতে পেলাম না। অগত্যা ট্র্যাফিক পুলিশের কাজটিও আমাদেরই করতে হলো। তো যাইহোক তখনই আবার ঠিক করা গেলো বারাসাতে নেমে লাভ নেই তারথেকে একবারে ডাকবাংলো পর্যন্ত যাওয়া হোক সেখান থেকে কোনো সাটেল বা অন্য কোনো গাড়ি রিজার্ভ করে নেওয়া যাবে। কিন্তু ডাকবাংলো পৌঁছেও কোনো ফল হলো না এদিকে আমাদের অটোর কাকাও এবার আমাদের গাড়ি থেকে নামানোর জন্য ব্যস্ত হয়ে পড়েছেন। তবুও কাকাকে অনেক জোরাজুরি করে মধ্যমগ্রাম পর্যন্ত যাওয়া হলো। কিন্তু দত্তপুকুর থেকে মধ্যমগ্রাম মাত্র ১২ কিমি রাস্তার জন্য কাকা ভাড়া চেয়ে বসলো ৬০০ টাকা যেটার ভাড়া এমনি সময় ৩০০ টাকা। কাকাকে অনেক জোরাজুরি করার পর বোঝা গেলো কাকা যেহেতু আমাদের অটোতেই ধুম বাইকের স্বাদ দিয়ে দিয়েছেন তাই তিনি কোনো ভাবেই ভাড়া কমাবেন না। ঠেকায় পড়ে আমাদেরও সেটাই দিতে হলো। তারপর আমরা কিছু জন অটো থেকে সমস্ত লাগেজ গুলি নামাতে লাগলাম আর বাকিরা গেলো গাড়ির সন্ধানে। কিছুক্ষণের মধ্যেই ওরা দেখলাম ২ টো টেক্সি নিয়ে হাজির, ঠিক হলো যে গাড়ি দুটো নিয়ে মধ্যমগ্রাম থেকে আমরা যাবো দমদম স্টেশনে তারপর ওখান থেকে ট্রেন ধরে শিয়ালদহ। কেননা গাড়ি নিয়ে একেবারে শিয়ালদহ গেলে অনেক বেশি সময় লেগে যাবে এবং ট্রেন আমরা নির্ঘাত মিস করবো। তো আমরা কোনমতে তাড়াহুড়ো করে মালপত্র নিয়ে গাড়িতে উঠে বসলাম এবং গাড়ি রওনা দিল দমদমের উদ্দেশ্যে। ঘড়িতে তখন ৯ টা বেজে ১৫ মিনিট।

ড্রাইভার কাকাকে আমাদের অবস্থাটা খুলে বলতে কাকা যতটা সম্ভব বাড়িয়ে দিল স্পিডওমিটারএর কাটা। কিন্তু তবুও আড়াই নম্বর গেটের সামনে এসে অফিস ফেরৎ যাত্রীদের ভিড়টা আর এড়ানো গেলো না; ফেঁসে গেলাম জ্যামে।

 ভিড় কাটিয়ে যতসম্ভব তাড়াতাড়ি দমদম স্টেশনে এসে পৌঁছে ব্যাগ পত্র নামিয়ে ভাড়া দিতে গিয়ে শুনি ৫০০ করে ২ টো গাড়ি ১০০০ টাকা। এই কাকার সাথেও দরদাম করতে গিয়ে বুঝলাম কাকা এই জ্যাম এর মধ্যেও এত তাড়াতাড়ি আমাদের দমদম স্টেশনে পৌঁছে দিয়েছে এটাই আমাদের বাবার ভাগ্যি, উনি এটাও বললেন যে জোরে গাড়ি চালানোর জন্য ওনার গাড়িতে নাকি অনেক চাপ পড়ে গ্যাছে। যাইহোক যত কথা বাড়বে তত আমাদের দেরি। সেইভেবে তাড়াতাড়ি কড়কড়ে ২ টো ৫০০ টাকার নোট ওনার হাতে গুজে দিয়ে বিশাল লাগেজ নিয়ে দৌড় লাগলাম ২ নং প্প্ল্যাটফর্মের উদ্দেশ্যে। ওভারব্রীজের ওপর দিয়ে যখন ছুটছি তখন শুনতে পেলাম ২ নং প্লাটফর্মে নৈহাটি লোকাল ঢোকার খবর হচ্ছে। দৌড়ে গিয়ে যখন সবাই মিলে শিয়ালদহগামী ট্রেনে উঠলাম তখন ঘড়িতে ৯ টা বেজে ৫৩ মিনিট। ট্রেন ছাড়লো।

ট্রেনে উঠে আমরা সবাই শীতের মধ্যেও দরদর করে ঘামতে লাগলাম। সবার বুকেই ঢিপঢিপ করছে, যে এতকিছু করেও শেষরক্ষা হবে তো? ট্রেন যখন বিধাননগর স্টেশন ছাড়ছে, ট্রেনের দরজায় দাড়িয়ে প্লাটফর্মে লাল আলো জ্বলে থাকা ঘড়িতে দেখলাম সময় রাত ৯ টা বেজে ৫৮ মিনিট।  দার্জিলিং মেইল ছাড়বে ১০ টা বেজে ১০ মিনিটে। কারো মুখে কোন কথা নেই, সবাই খালি একমনে ভগবানকে ডেকে চলেছি। শেষরক্ষাটা হবে তো? দার্জিলিং মেইলটা পাবো তো?
ট্রেন যখন ধীরে ধীরে শিয়ালদহ স্টেশনে ঢুকছে দূর থেকে আমরা দেখতে পাচ্ছি দার্জিলিং মেইল নিজের জায়গায় অর্থাৎ প্লাটফর্ম নং ৯বি তে চুপচাপ দাড়িয়ে আছে। ট্রেনটা দেখার পর থেকে সবার বুকের ঢিপঢিপানি আরো দ্বিগুণ হয়ে গেল। সবাই একমনে ভগবানকে ডেকে চলেছি যাতে আমাদের ট্রেনটা ৯বি প্ল্যাটফর্মের আশপাশের কোনো প্লাটফর্মে দেয়। কিন্তু ওই শীতের রাতে ভগবানও বোধহয় কম্বল মুড়ি দিয়ে ঘুমাচ্ছিলেন অথবা ৩১ শে ডিসেম্বর রাতে বর্ষবরণ অনুষ্ঠানে ব্যস্ত ছিলেন। তাইজন্যেই হয়ত তিনি আর আমাদের ডাক শুনতে পেলেন না। আর আমাদের ট্রেনটা আস্তে আস্তে নিজের মর্জি মতো এগিয়ে চললো শিয়ালদহ স্টেশনের ২ নং প্ল্যাটফর্মের দিকে। আমরা সবাই ট্রেনের দরজায় দাড়িয়ে শুনতে পেলাম দার্জিলিং মেইলের প্রথম সাইরেন টা বাজলো। শিয়ালদহ স্টেশনের ঘড়িটা জানান দিচ্ছে সময় তখন ১০ টা বেজে ১০ মিনিট। যথারীতি আমাদের ডাউন নৈহাটি লোকাল ২ নং প্লাটফর্মে থামলো, আমরা প্লাটফর্মে পা দিলাম আর ওদিকে দার্জিলিং মেইলও তার শেষ সাইরেন টা বাজিয়ে দিয়ে রাজার মেজাজে আমাদের সবাইকে টাটা জানিয়ে প্লাটফর্ম ছেড়ে বেরিয়ে যেতে লাগলো নিজের গন্তব্যের উদ্দেশ্যে। একটা শেষচেষ্টা করার জন্য পড়িমড়ি দৌড় লাগালাম ৯বি প্ল্যাটফর্মের উদ্দেশ্যে। কিন্তু ২নং থেকে ৯বি প্ল্যাটফর্মের যা দূরত্ব এবং ওই সময় শিয়ালদহ স্টেশনে যা ভিড় থাকে সেসব কাটিয়ে আমরা যখন ৯বি প্ল্যাটফর্মের সামনে এসে উপস্থিত হলাম তখন আমাদের দার্জিলিং মেইল প্লাটফর্ম ছেড়ে বেরিয়ে চলে গেছে।

চোখের সামনে খালি ভাসতে লাগলো যে আমাদের এত সাধের রিজার্ভ করা সিট গুলোতে অন্য কেউ শুয়ে বসে যাচ্ছে। এত কাট খড় পুরিয়েও শেষরক্ষা টা হলো না শেষ পর্যন্ত। শক টা এমনই লেগেছিল যে পুরো ৫ মিনিট একে অপরের মুখের দিকে তাকিয়ে দাড়িয়ে রইলাম। শকটক কাটার পর যখন হুশ ফিরলো তখন আইআরসিটিসি অ্যাপ খুলে দেখা গেলো পরের ট্রেন পদাতিক এক্সপ্রেস রাত ১১ টা বেজে ২০ মিনিটে। তখন তো আর রিজার্ভ টিকিটে শুয়ে বসে যাবার কোনো আশা নেই, জেনারেলএই যেতে হবে। তাই আমি আর দীপ বাকি সবার লাগেজ গুলো নিয়ে এগিয়ে চললাম জেনারেল সিটের জন্য লাইনে দাড়াতে আর বাকিরা চলে গেলো টিকিট কাউন্টারে টিকিটের ব্যাবস্থা করতে। জেনারেলের লাইনে গিয়ে যা দেখলাম তাতে আমার আর দীপ দুজনেরই চক্ষু চড়ক গাছ। কম করে ২৫০ থেকে ৩০০ লোকের পরে আমাদের লাইন। এমনিতেই দত্তপুকুর থেকে শিয়ালদহ ১০ টাকা করে ৭ জন মোট ৭০ টাকা ভাড়ার বদলে ১৬০০ টাকা ভাড়া দিয়ে এসেছি তাও আবার এত দৌড় ঝাঁপ করে, আসার পরই আবার পদাতিক এক্সপ্রেসের নতুন করে টিকিট কাটা হলো ২০০ টাকা করে। তারমানে উত্তরবঙ্গ পৌঁছনোর আগেই প্রায় সবার ৫০০ টাকা করে অতিরিক্ত খরচ। আমাদের মত স্টুডেন্টদের কাছে যেটা ভীষণ একটা চিন্তার বিষয়। তারওপর জেনেরালে যা লাইন সেটা দেখে খালি ভেবে চলেছি যে সিটে অন্তত একটু বসতে পারবো তো নাকি পুরো রাত ট্রেনের মেঝেতে বসেই কাটিয়ে দিতে হবে।

যথা সময়ে ট্রেন প্লাটফর্মে এসে ঢুকলো এবং জেনারেল কামড়ার দরজা খুলে দিয়ে এক এক করে ভেতরে ঢোকা শুরু হলো। ততক্ষনে শুধু বিধান ছাড়া বাকি কেউ এসে পৌঁছায়নি আমাদের কাছে। বাকি সবাই প্ল্যাটফর্মের বাইরে গেছিলো হাড়ে বাতাস লাগাতে। আমরা ৩ জন সবার লাগেজ গুলো নিয়ে গুটি গুটি পায়ে এগোতে লাগলাম। এতক্ষণে আমাদের ভাগ্য আমাদের দিকে একটু উকি মেরে তাকালো। ট্রেনের যে দুটি কামরা জেনারেল প্যাসেঞ্জার দের জন্য বরাদ্দ থাকে তার মধ্যে এতক্ষন শুধু প্রথম কামরার দরজা টাই খোলা ছিলো; কিন্তু যখনই আমরা দ্বিতীয় জেনারেল কামরার দরজার সামনে এসে উপস্থিত হলাম ঠিক তখনই ওই দরজাটি খুলে দেওয়া হলো। ফলে আমরাও তাড়াতাড়ি উঠে নিজেদের পছন্দ মতো সিট নিয়ে বসে পরলাম এবং লাগেজ গুলো দিয়ে বাকিদের জায়গা গুলো রেখে দিলাম। কিছুক্ষণের মধ্যেই বাকি সবাই ফিরে এলো। রাতের খাবার আমরা যে যার বাড়ি থেকে নিয়েই এসেছিলাম। যে যার নিজের সিট দখল করার পর রাতের খাবারের পর্বটি মিটিয়ে নেওয়া হলো। ঘড়ির কাঁটা মিলিয়ে একদম ১১:২০ তেই ট্রেনটি শেষ বারের মত হর্ন বাজিয়ে নড়েচড়ে উঠলো এবং শুরু হলো পথ চলা। এতো বাধা বিপত্তি কাটিয়ে আমরা যে অবশেষে ট্রেনে চেপে আমাদের গন্তব্যের দিকে চলেছি এটাই যেনো একটা বিশাল ব্যাপার। জীবনে প্রথমবারের জন্য বাড়ির লোক ছাড়া নিজের ছোটবেলার বন্ধুদের সাথে ঘুরতে বেরোনো এবং তার শুরু টাই যদি হয় এমন করে, তখন মনের ভেতরে যে কিরকম অনুভূতি হয় সেটা লিখে প্রকাশ করা সম্ভব না। আড্ডা চললো অনেক রাত পর্যন্ত। শেষে ৩:৩০ তে নাগাদ শরীরকে ক্লান্তিতে গ্রাস করলো। ঘুম ভাঙলো একদম নিউ জলপাইগুড়ি ঢোকার কিছুক্ষন আগে।
